Welcome to my Music Classroom!

I'm Mrs. Zurita, the music teacher for Kindergarten to 4th grade students, as well as the director of our 5-8th grade Choir and Handbells ensembles at Rogers Adventist School.

I'm excited to share that our K-4 music program is based on the renowned Dalcroze method. This curriculum focuses on engaging students through movement, where their bodies become their first instrument. Through the Dalcroze method, we will explore rhythm, melody, and harmony, laying a strong foundation for musical development.

 This innovative approach, developed by Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, combines music, movement, and rhythm for a holistic learning experience.

Our music program encompasses a wide range of activities and concepts.

Students will explore rhythm, meter, and expression through listening, singing, and improvisation. They will learn about note values, meters, phrases, and expression symbols. Pitch matching, scale identification, and playing instruments are emphasized. Students will engage in solo and group work, developing confidence and cooperation. Spatial awareness, body movement, and creative expression are fostered. Through these experiences, students will gain a deep understanding of music and its emotional impact.

The Handbells class is divided into two groups: one for grades 5 and 6, and another for Junior High students. Using tuned handbells, students learn to create beautiful sounds in a choir ensemble. The class develops musical skills, coordination, and appreciation for handbell ringing. Students participate in rehearsals, activities, and performances. The class schedule is as follows:

Jr. High Bells:

• Mondays and Wednesdays
• 1:10 PM to 2:00 PM

5 & 6 Bells:

• Mondays and Wednesdays
• 2:00 PM to 2:55 PM

Students learn handbell techniques, sheet music reading, and rehearse ensemble pieces. Performances include concerts and recitals, showcasing their skills and love for handbell ringing. The class offers a fulfilling musical experience, developing skills and fostering appreciation for handbell music.

The Handbells ensemble is a performing group, and students are expected to participate in all activities and performances. Please find attached the syllabus and policies for the Handbells program.

The choir aims to develop students vocal skills, musicality, and appreciation for choral music. Students will explore various musical genres, improve their singing technique, and learn to harmonize as part of a group. The course promotes a love for music, builds confidence, and fosters teamwork among students. The Choir class schedule is as follows:

5th - 8th Grade Choir:

• Tuesdays and Thursdays
• 2:05 PM to 2:55 PM

The Choir  is a performing group, and students are expected to participate in all activities and performances. Please find attached the syllabus and policies for the Choir program.

Mrs. Zurita, a master of pedagogy, embarked on her musical journey at the Conservatory of the University of Montemorelos, Mexico . Excelling in flute performance, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Flute Performance from the Autonome University of Nuevo Leon Mexico. Continuing her studies in France, she earned the highest distinction, a Diploma of Musical Studies, at the National School of Music in Lyon. It was during this time that she discovered her passion for the baroque flute, leading her to pursue specialization in the Early Musique Department of the Haute Ecole de musique de Genève in Switzerland.

Mrs. Zurita's passion for music education led her to pursue a Master's degree, specializing in Dalcroze Eurhythmics Pedagogy. In 2019, she proudly achieved a Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy, focusing on the comprehensive application of the Dalcroze method in teaching music. One of the remarkable aspects of the Dalcroze method is its adaptability to students of all ages, from elementary school children to adults. Mrs. Zurita's expertise in music pedagogy enables her to inspire and educate a diverse range of students, fostering their musical growth and creativity. 

This comprehensive training equipped her to teach music, including choir,  solfège, handbells and improvisation;  in addition to modern flute, and baroque flute.

Throughout her career, Mrs. Zurita has served at esteemed institutions such as the Geneva Jaques Dalcroze Institute, Geneva Popular Conservatory, and the Municipal School of Music in Meyrin, Switzeerland. In addition to conducting private lessons from her studios in Lyon and Geneva, she has won acclaim as a flutist, earning first prize in the National "Gildardo Mojica" flute competition. Mrs. Zurita has delighted audiences as a soloist with renowned orchestras and has participated in chamber music at the Beaux Arts of Lyon, captivating listeners across multiple countries.
